NEOCON CASUALTIES OF IRAQ WMD FALLOUT

On 8 July, in the "Washington Post, Walter Pincus announced

that "The Bush administration acknowledged for the first time

yesterday that President Bush should not have alleged in his

State of the Union address in January that Iraq had sought to

buy uranium in Africa to reconstitute its nuclear weapons

program." It was the Brits' fault: "The statement was prompted

by publication of a British parliamentary commission report",

but this didn't hold up under closer examination since "the CIA

had already debunked this intelligence" -- thanks to former

senior diplomat, Joseph C. Wilson -- but it was nonetheless

included in Bush's speech. On 16 July, Pincus suggested that

this false uranium claim remained in the State of the Union

address because "almost all the other evidence had either been

undercut or disproved by UN inspectors in Iraq."

On 18 July, Fairness & Accuracy In Reporting (FAIR) published

"Bush Uranium Lie Is Tip of the Iceberg", noting that "the

truthfulness of one claim in George W. Bush's State of the

Union address has become the focus of growing media scrutiny.

The attention media are paying to this single assertion should

be part of a larger journalistic inquiry into other

misstatements and exaggerations that have been made by the Bush

administration about Iraq." FAIR then analyzed five cases among

other pre-war deceptions.

EXAMINING THE 14 AUGUST NORTHEAST BLACKOUT

The 17 August edition of "Risks-Forum Digest", moderated by

Peter G. Neumann <http://www.risks.org>, carried several

interesting contributions concerning the recent blackout on the

East Coast of the US. Neumann notes "the similarity with the

massive West Coast grid blackout on 2 July 1996 in which a tree

touched a power line, and the operator who had detected an

anomaly could not find the phone number required for the manual

alert. And then of course, there were numerous claims that such

a massive outage could not happen again -- until the eight-

state collapse on 10 August 1996!"

WMRC RELEASES ITS TERRORISM "HIT PARADE"

The United Kingdom is a "prize target" in western Europe for

Islamic terrorist organizations linked to the Qaida network,

according to Guy Dunn, director of the London-based, threat-

assessment specialists, World Markets Research Centre (WMRC),

in its annual "Global Terrorism Index" for 2003-2004, published

on 18 August.

HALLIBURTON AND KELLOGG BROWN & ROOT "UBER ALLES"

The British Ministry of Defence (MoD) has confirmed, in a brief

statement on 15 August, that Kellogg Brown & Root (KBR)

Services, the exclusive logistics supplier for the US Army and

Navy, had emerged as the "preferred bidder" for a seven-year

contract -- worth 50 million annually -- to coordinate

logistics support for British troops serving overseas. This is

the second major MoD contract KBR has won in a month. In mid-

July, the company -- a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Houston-

based Halliburton Corporation -- was also named as the

preferred bidder to upgrade British Army garrisons at Salisbury

Plain and Aldershot. This contract is worth an estimated 4

billion.

The chief executive of Halliburton from 1995 to 2000 was the

current US vice president, Dick Cheney, who received a $30

million compensation package when he left the company to run

for public office. This year, Halliburton won massive non-

bidding contract work in occupied Iraq, simply "given" to it by

the Bush administration. This relationship has led to

accusations that KBR is the "company of choice" for the US

administration to "get into British military". In May 2001,

President George W. Bush produced a plan to end the energy

crisis in California, a crisis in which Bush-administration-

related companies played a major role.

GREAT BRITAIN

DELIBERATE MI5 "MIX-UP" FOR SHIN BET

Rogue elements within MI5 -- sometimes referred to as

"securocrats" -- have repeatedly tried to undermine the

Northern Ireland peace process by disseminating false and often

libelous information on senior Sinn Fein officials and former

members of the Provisional IRA, an organization respecting a

ceasefire since mid-1997 and having accepted -- in all but name

-- that the "long war" against British Crown forces in Northern

Ireland is over. MI5 "securocrats" are very likely behind the

ridiculous case in Colombia against four Irish Republicans (see

"Colombia - FARC/IRA Trial Adjourned", INT, n. 425 22), and

they clearly overstepped the mark last July and caused a

serious rift between the British Security Service and its

Israeli counterpart, Shin Bet, by passing on "erroneous

intelligence" which led the arrest and four-day detention of

Belfast journalist, Sean O'Muireagain.

NORTHERN IRELAND

MORE FRU "MOLE" ALLEGATIONS

The President of Sinn Fein, Gerry Adams, MP, has called on the

British government to start taking responsibility for their

securocrats and spies who are "actively involved in spreading

disinformation and causing confusion" after journalist, Sean

Maguire, the editor of the "North Belfast News" since 1998, was

identified by a former Force Research Unit (FRU) agent, who

calls himself "Kevin Fulton", as a British Army "mole" who had

infiltrated the higher echelons of the Provisional IRA.

ISRAEL - Abandoning A Sinking Ship. On 20 July, the mass

circulation Hebrew newspaper, "Yedeot Ahranot", published a

report stating that more than 650,000 Israeli Jews, or 13% of

the nation's Jewish population, have immigrated to the US and

other countries. New York and Los Angeles seem to be the

favored destinations with about 150,000 and 115,000 Israeli

Jewish residents respectively. The paper, quoting recent

statistics by the Israeli foreign Ministry, also pointed out

that there were significant concentrations of Israeli Jews in

Miami, San Francisco and Philadelphia. Israel's population is

currently 6.7 million, including nearly 1.3 million Arabs, and

around half a million non-Arab Christians and disguised

Muslims, mainly immigrants from the former Soviet Union. Of the

650,000 Israeli Jews living overseas, the Israeli foreign

Ministry found that most were permanent emigrants; e.g., people

who have lived outside Israel with their families for at least

four years. The Israeli Foreign Ministry study indicates that

the reasons given by emigrants for leaving Palestine include

the Palestinian intifada and the difficult economic situation.

Since the outbreak of the Palestinian uprising against Israel's

occupation, per capita income has fallen about $3,000 a year

and unemployment reached 11%. The Israeli press also reported

that Israel lost nearly $8 billion dollars as a result of the

Intifada.

MORE "SEXED UP" INTEL ON IRAQI WMD'S

A former senior analyst with the Office of National Assessment

(ONA), Andrew Wilkie, has accused the Australian Prime

Minister, John Howard, and the Foreign Minister, Alexander

Donner, of attempting to undermine his credibility by

describing him as a "malcontent" and a "hysterical" witness in

response to his allegations that the government had "sexed up"

intelligence on the alleged threat posed by Iraq's weapons of

mass destruction (WMD) program to "deliberately mislead

Australians and build the case for war."
